Since both Pride and Prejudice and Bridget Jones's Diary have similar plots there are many parallels between the two books in terms of characters, the most obvious one being Fitzwilliam Darcy and Mark Darcy. As well as sharing a name the two both share an overwhelming amount of pride. Both Darcys are well off and have spent their youth only interacting with people of their class. When their respective protagonist comes along they are initially taken back since both Elizabeth and Bridget are a little rough around the edges. They both however end up falling for the girl the originally weren’t all that sure about and turn out to be the perfect match.
Another character parallel is between General Wickham and Daniel Cleaver. Both of these men are cleaver and charming and quickly capture the hearts of Elizabeth and Bridget but they turn out to be lying, conniving and cheating conmen.
Mrs. Jones has two parallels from the original story. The first one obviously being Mrs. Bennet, Elizabeth overbearing, pushy mother who is constantly reminding her daughter that she must get married soon. That being said when Mrs. Jones leaves her husband she becomes the Lydia of the book by getting with the first man she can find even if that means risking her family’s reputation.
The last character parallel found in the book is Jane and Bridget’s Diary. In Pride and Prejudice Jane (Elizabeth’s older sister) is the person who Elizabeth confides in. Bridget does not have that person that she can tell everything to and so she uses her diary as a confidante.
