Plot Summary
Bridget Jones’s Diary by Helen Fielding portrays a year in the life of Bridget Jones through a series of journal entries. Bridget is a self-professed “career woman” who has recently slipped into the scary category of being over 30 and still single. The book begins on New Years Day with a list of Bridget’s New Year resolutions, which include: losing weight, quitting smoking and of course, forming a functioning relationship with a responsible adult. Bridget beings the year the same way she always does, with a visit to her parents for a New Year’s party with all of their friends. After countless questions about Bridget’s non-existent love life, Bridget’s over bearing mother introduces her to Mark Darcy, the rich lawyer son of one her friends and a recent divorcé. Mark and Bridget do not hit it off. She finds him stuck up and boring and he has no attraction to her whatsoever. Yet Bridget does not let one bad interaction with the opposite sex slow her down. She quickly involves herself with her boss, Daniel Cleaver. After months of on and off dating, they finally make their relationship official. But Bridget starts to realize that Daniel might not be the dream man she always wanted. Bridget also finds that Mark Darcy ends up working his way more and more into her life. Mark soon becomes a true friend by helping Bridget with everything from getting her new career on track to helping her mother with financial fraud issues. Bridget’s relationship with Mark goes through ups and downs but the two start realize that maybe they have more in common then one would think and that first impression aren’t always the best things to go by.
